Hello,
I am very new to garands and was wondering how do you know when your garand was made? I know that most if not all are put together from parts but is there a serial number date range chart somewhere for HRA garands. I saw a reference based on the receiver and barrel combo but what if the barrel isn't from the original rifle?
Thank you

If you think that your barrel may have been swapped, then you go to a table (such as that complied by Scott Duff) that lists Receiver SN/barrel combinations with known originals. If you find out where your receiver SN falls within that list (between two other serial numbers), then you will have an idea what date your barrel should be.

It isn't perfect, but its about all we have for post war Garands.

logangrimnar;

First off, welcome to the Forums. It's always good to see new members joining up.

Next, do you have an HRA s/n and bbl date you are particularly interested in?

If so, and your willing, post your bbl date and receiver s/n and I'll check it for you. I know many here do not like to reveal their s/n's, partially or whole, and that's their prerogative.

Luck to you.

From Scott Duff's book:
1953 - 500 delivered
1954 - 114,459 delivered
1955 - 158,187 delivered
1956 - 155,454 delivered

The deliveries total 428,600, while HRA's assigned number ranges total 445,600, leaving a 17,000 shortage. As it happens, reported serial numbers (http://www.jouster.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?36-M1-Garand-Serial-Numbers) include a single gap in HRA serial numbers exceeding 17,000 between 5,670,153 and 5,688,643.

Hello,
The serial number on the receiver is 5652581 and the barrel is marked lmr 12 54. Does that match? and if so is the rifle from 1954? Also it has an IHC sight. Is this rare? I think I won the lottery. It has a cmp walnut stock.:)

Here you go, you can lookup serial numbers here, http://oldguns.net/sn_php/milmods.htm. The barrel could well be original to the rifle.

The year of manufacture for serial number 5652581 is 1955.

Estimate based on delivery records.
