    standard m1a questions

Hey guys I just got a standard m1a, as I was breaking it down to clean it I started to notice that it has a trw trigger group a wra oprod and a bbl marked NM.308. I'm super confused! What exactly do I have?

Call Springfield Inc. with your serial number and they will tell you what model you have bought.

Sounds like a loaded model with medium weight barrel marked NM 308.

Thank you the responses! Now my next question, what ammo should I use for elk hunting? I've been cruising around other forums and guys have been using federal Sierra match king 175 grain. Is this stuff any good?

I completely understand! I was thinking about using a 168 grain bthp. I currently don't reload some all my ammo will be commercial.

I used mine for Antelope hunting and my 150gr Sierra psp's over imr4064 did a fine job on that critter at 200 yards.I wouldn't be afraid at all to use that same cartridge for Deer.

SGK 165 lead tipped hunting bullet runs good at load specs same as 168 SMK and is a legal game bullet anywhere in the U.S. where you can hunt with a centerfire rifle.

If you do not hand load, buy a shuster adjustable gas plug and follow directions. You can then use commercial for your hunting without fear of damaging your rifle.

It's an M1A, there's no need for an adjustable gas plug at all. Run it just as it was designed.

Really not nessesary unless you are plinking with 180+ hunting rounds. 168 grain is plenty for most hunting applications. The M1A is a stout rifle, op rod is far less prone to bending with short throw. I wouldn't worry about it with just a few rounds. Heck, your aim will be off anyway since your thinking about the rod and not the target. I've used the plug on my Garand but sold it, found it to be short of snake oil considering mil spec ammo is plentiful.

NM 308 means National Match 308.

So you have at least a match grade barrel.
If the front sight is marked 062 you also have a match front sight

If by chance it came with a Springfield govt model scope, the 200-600 yd crosshairs are calibrated for 168gr bullets
