How do they expect us to make any kind of an informed bid on this auction? Unless it's just me, I can't see inside the green wrapper, and their description leaves a whole lot to be desired. How do they know it's new if they haven't opened it? At the very least, someone should carefully unwrap enought of it to read the make, year & serial number. Only the Lord knows what's inside there.

Hmmm lets see,2 days,39 bids, started at $10 and up to $380 with 13 days left.I don't imagine they're really concerned too much about "informed bids". Pig in a poke.

If they would post more information, they might be able to squeeze even more out of the bidders. Sad way to run an auction. Just like the scrap auctions coming up -- how many of the "little guys" can really bid on a pallet of scrap stocks, etc.? Everyone can not afford to pay the shipping costs, etc. associated with this kind of an auction. It looks like they are just appealing to the dealers who can afford to buy this stuff up and then resell it on eBay to unsuspecting buyers. VERY SAD!! Does anyone else have thoughts on this?

No.....it is what it is. Don't bid if you are uncertain.

Can you imagine the administrative and labor cost of breaking down and selling scrap in small amounts so that the "little guy" can buy some?

I can MAYBE see the drill rifles - but even that depends on the condition.

it will go way more than $380, I would give more myself as you cannot find NIW 1905 bayonets anywhere at any price, let the buyer beware and I am thinking $500-700 for this blade- we shall see.

Sheesh, some people would kick if you hanged them with a NEW rope!

There are a lot of people who find the mystery of an auction like this very exciting. (136th TFS is obviously not one of them). Having been a CMP buyer/forum participant for many years, I know with absolute certainty that Orest Michaels is a master of "maximizing profits" . . . the man knows exactly what he's doing.

I think tmilliron's estimate of $500-$700 is likely accurate, but possibly even on the low side.

ETA: Nowhere does it state that this IS a brand new bayonet, in fact the description states "It could be original or reparked finish, no guarantee."

Maybe they want to see how much it'll bring to guage how to price the rest.Ever think about that?

Is there anyone out there who ever agrees with what I say? Maybe after 50 years of collecting & US Martial Arms experience, I've outlived my usefullness. Based upon what I've seen in some (most) of these auctions, the world is full of folks who seem to have an awful lot of disposable income to spend on this hobby. Recession? Depression? Maybe not in all parts of the country??

Personally, I would want to know what I'm bidding on.

No different than selling wrapped magazines at a high price b/c of what 'might' be under the wrapper; it's just a bigger price tag.

If someone wants a 16 that bad, and doesn't want to risk missing out on the open sale, and they have the $ to spare, more power to them. Too rich for my blood.

                      On the more editorial side:
Haven't we all laughed, rolled our eyes, or at least shaken our heads at some ending prices for auctions outside here?

So why do we laugh at high final auction bids outside CMP, but complain about them on our own site?

Every bidder is registered, although not necessarily an active forum participant.

None can complain about a 10$ starting bid - meaning members are running the price up against each other.

Does that make us our own worst enemy?

Absolutely no offense intended 136th TFS. I'm a cheap Scotsman and I wouldn't personally bid on anything blind either. But Orest DOES know what he's doing.

A few years ago, I worked for a man who owned a company . . . . much like any of the thousands of other companys in this country that nobody here has ever heard of. His salary at the time was a little shy of $5,000,000 per year. Yes, there are quite a few out there who can drop $10K without the slightest flinch if they see something they like, and I suspect that more than a few occasionally shop the CMP auction site.

Wow... that is going to be one heck of an exspensive wrapper! At least an unused Garand you can fondle and not shoot and kinda keep it new. No way I could not unwrap this thing if it were mine. My CMP pagages get opened on the spot before I even get them inside the house!

That cuts both ways. If there were more info they could get alot less if it's not in "new" condition. The CMP seems to do just fine with out a bunch of arm chair comando's running the show.
