What kind of targets for m1 competition?

My wife and I are interested in competing with our M1’s. We don’t know the 1st thing about the different classes of competition. For regular as issued matches what targets do y’all shoot at? What are the positions? We’d like to start training while we figure it all out. Thanks!

Also what classes can we use .308 m1’s?

What distancewill you be shooting at?

At 200yrds its the SR target
At 100 yards its the SR1 target

Heres a good spot to get em with all different kinds

Course of fire will depend on what competition your shooting. Here are some other good reads

It would be worth looking for a local club that runs a CMP clinic preferably with live fire. Most clubs that run CMP matches run clinics in the spring.
A .308 garand will put you into the unlimited class in official M1 matches.

Great info guys! We would be up to shoot at any range, we have a 200 yard range at my house and a 600 yard range a mile down the road we can use, so can practice out to those ranges. I will look over those links, thanks again.

When checking for As-Issued Military Matches many local clubs will host a clinic in advance as Garandguy42 was mentioning. You may already know about the CMP Competition Tracker at https://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.p...r_value=CLINIC Search by State or Event type.

You want to zero and practice at 200 as all CMP Games events are shot at 200 yards, slow fire prone, rapid fire prone, and slow fire standing. don't bother with shooting off a rest or a bench, doesn't help. If you want to shoot "across the course" matches those are 200, 300, and 600.

where are you located? If you are anywhere near East TN, come on out to Oak Ridge Sportsmens Association. Our next CMP clinic is 20 April.

I’m in ND, I only shoot from field positions and don’t even have a bench, so this seems right up my alley, lol. The reason I asked about the targets is that I was imagining this tiny 10 ring but it occurred to me at some point that it was actually probably quite large. I will have to order some of the actual targets so I can approximate something Cheaply at home at different ranges. Maybe a reduced target for 100 yards for those days where 200 yards isn’t practical.

To save some money and get more targets, just buy the replacement centers for the full size targets. I'm sure you're good enough that's all you need....:D

Lol, I don’t know about that. That’s a good idea though I can put something behind it also. I read up about the matches and what is allowed in the different positions, I think I’m going to start off practicing from prone, sitting and standing . In our service qual we use the same positions but are allowed to let the magazine of our m-4’s to touch the ground. I’m really excited about the prospect of competing, I was on midway last night trying to figure out the cheapest way to reload good training ammo. I was hoping I could buy some good bulk 150ish grain bullets to load. I really think I need to build a .308 rifle for training purposes since ammunition is so much cheaper.

You can always buy centers and then buy pasters if you have any strays :)
