Would Love a Detailed Report

I'm going to be in the Fort Wayne area this weekend. I'd go a day early and make the 2 hour drive to Port Clinton if I thought there were any goodies to be had. I'm mostly interested M1Ds; but, I'd still make the drive if I thought I'd come home with a FG Special.

Any scuttle butt on the inventory?

USMCNewdog 03-09-2017 09:34 AM

Last Saturday they had one rack of cmp special field graded

I intend to call North Store Friday afternoon, but I would love one too. I am some 10 hours away but will be visiting family in Michigan so I intend to make the 3 hour drive to be there Saturday morning for possibly a once in a lifetime visit. Any recommendations on a good spot for lunch in Port Clinton?

It looks to me like there are a lot of great pubs and eateries down by the fisherman's wharf.

I decided to just throw myself into the hands of fate. I booked a room at the Island House Hotel Friday night. I'm going to head out from the Indianapolis area after work Friday night.

Thank goodness I am blessed with a girlfriend that goes with the flow. This was originally a two day trip to see Grand Funk Railroad in Angola, IN.

I'll see you Saturday morning!

I think fate is going to treat you pretty good. Especially if you get the fresh perch at Jolly Roger. :D

There's an Irish place downtown, too. Some like to make the thirty or so minute drive to the east side of Toledo to get the Tony Packo experience. HAven't been there in a long time - anybody know if it's still in business?

pkost 03-09-2017 07:59 PM

was that the place Klinger talked about on MASH?

Winnie 03-09-2017 09:11 PM

Surely some forum member went today. Anybody? Bueller? Whats the limits in place? The normal 8/calendar year or something less?

Looks like Tony Packo's is still in business: http://www.tonypacko.com/

The Irish pub is McCarthy's. Nice place. However, if you've never been to Packo's you have to go. Famous for their dogs but be sure to get some of their Chicken Paprikash with dumplings. It's like Hungarian Heaven on Earth!

There are a couple of not so great ones too. I'll second McCarthy's for sure though.

No reports?

I was there yesterday. Lots to look at. Some WW2 correct, maybe a dozen each of post-war SA and HRA collectors, maybe 20 6m SA's, (less after I left, heh) full racks of $830 and $1030 specials. I found an $830 special with an early-ish SN and very, very little pitting that had me thinking, but I put it back. Then there are all the snipers, too. Lots of drill M1's and a couple drill 1903's. Free pens and Teddy Roosevelt posters, and hands that smell like cosmoline afterward. What's not to like?

Re eateries. Being a Port Clinton native, I have to throw a pitch for Bell Mells Tavern. Saturday is their dog and draft special day. It's really great - if you are a chilli dog fan. If not, go to Jolly Roger.

Were there any specials in .308 at the north store?

jhord 03-11-2017 07:30 AM

I didn't see any, but I also didn't look that hard.

All were 30-06 that I saw last Saturday.

Winnie 03-11-2017 12:36 PM

Maybe a dozen people this morning, plenty of rifles, over 20 6 mils when I left around noon, limit 2 on those, most with usgi stocks, good selection of WRA SG m1D, SA SG M1D, post war collectors and WWII correct. Garand drills were ehhh... Plenty of FG specials and CMP specials. Still Target rich environment for next week. There was no .308 rifles.

Jolly Roger's shrimp is great, they shorted me one, told me about it when they brought it out, came back with 3 more. Good times. Hope you found a nice WRA M1D Joker.

I did!

I found a low, six digit serial(...June of 1941) Service Grade WRA M1D with great barrel numbers that went home with me.

I also enjoyed fondling several of those WWII rifles. Just WOW!

Melissa, the fellas behind the counter and the opening crowd were a great bunch. Lots of great stories, jokes and wise cracks! I really enjoyed my first visit to the North Store!

It was great meeting you, Winnie!

Does anyone know the ammo situation at the north store?

They had corrosive Norwegian spam cans, not sure how many. They also had loose HXP in Ammo cans and the boxed HXP in the new plastic cans.

14tharmored 03-12-2017 04:41 PM

Thank you

KUDOS to the CMP. I got my reproduction M82 and mount today. Apparently, they have the problem with the mount resolved. Unlike the mount I got last May, this one hand tightened effortlessly and seems to be rock solid.

I hand rubbed two coats of raw linseed oil onto the stock. It looks really nice; but, it could still use more coats.

I still need the cheek pad. I have a cheap one; but, I think I'm going to order one from Turner Leather.

Any way, here is a tease...

Looks great, thanks for the scope report. I have an email in to Turner for a pad.
