Front sight block height for Redfield 63 on a Rem 540XR

Folks, the rifle in question is the Remington 540XR, with the big stock for position shooting.

The rear sight is the "scope height" Redfield 75 (Dog Leg). Looks nice, had the correct mounting base for the gun.

What is the height of the front sight block for use with the Redield 63? I found one reference to it being .460, and that is all I found. I can tell you that the present sight block of .236 is woefully short. If I was shooting at 250 yards, it would help me with high angle fire, just like a howitzer....

What Brownells said: Front sight height of: .502 inches

Uh, the block that is on it now is .236 from top of barrel to top of block.
The Lyman 93 has it's center at .495 above the bottom surface that fits on top of the sight block. I am missing something....

        .460 is correct

Measured the two on my rifles and the one spare I have on hand.

I found this earlier, was this the only height of the front base ever for the 540XR, or did you order it?

            From the '71 Redfield catalog:

A few variations on the black-cat-in-a-dark-room analogy:
            1. Philosophy is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat.
            2. Metaphysics is like being in a dark room and looking for a black cat that isn't there.
            3. Under Marxism, it's like being in a dark room, looking for a black cat that isn't there, and the State announces, "We found it!"

Your ad shows .350 as the sight base that came with the 540X, and there is NO corresponding base shown in the right hand column. Bet that means no other base is necessary....

I'd have to say that there is a strong possibility that .350 is reasonable.

540XR Front Base Parts from Gun Parts Corporation

I just ordered a base and two screws from GPC. I have no idea at this point of how high the block is. When the parts get in, I'll measure and report to you all.

I was worried about one of my rifles and decided I'd get a spare while they were available.

I did order the part listed in my previous post (it is my spare).

It is the exact same height as the two already installed on my rifles.

Both rifles also sport at dog leg 75 in the rear.

Got the parts in today. Front sight is .460, both screws fit perfectly into the tapped holes in the barrel.
