Picked up a nice stock

Picked up an absolutely mint walnut M14 stock at a gun show over the weekend. Looks like it was taken off a brand new rifle that was never issued. A light receiver heel imprint present. It's dry as a bone, with some of the white preservative stuff here and there. From the stamp under the buttplate, S under a half-diamond - H. Sacks & Sons, Inc. (Brookline, MA). Has a non-serif P. Nice DAS stamp. Is it HRA?

Nice pick up.

Not H&R but a Sykes stock. H&R stocks had a flat H under the butt plate.

But what rifle manufacturer used the stock based on the proof and DAS? I was thinking HRA but not sure.

Per this post http://forums.thecmp.org/showpost.ph...53&postcount=6 Sykes was a subcontractor to Springfield.

Did SA use that type of sans-serif P? It does not look like an SA proof to me, going by another SA M14 stock I have as well as M1 stocks.

Sacks supplied more than just one rifle maker. It looks like a Winchester to me.
But what do I know?

It isn't worth anything really, so I'll take it off your hands if you like.:)

Sad thing is, we use to buy them "all day long" like that, for $35 each.

That preservative looking stuff is more than likely dried linseed oil. Make sure you pick or get every bit of it off before oiling it again or finishing it with anything. They get locked in there under the finish, then start showing up later as white specs again.

But like I said, if you don't want all the hassle, I'll help you out.

Well done, nice score!

Thanks, I'm sure you have seen many more M14 stocks up close than I have (total of 4)...
I think I got a decent deal on it, though not anywhere near $35 ;) I have a decent parts kit that it should look great with when I figure out what to build. Most of my parts kit is SA, not that it matters if I use a different manufacturers stock. I am just curious to know.
