Got my M5A1 today

Hey, all. Got my Imperial M5A1 bayonet today (ordered Monday, shipped Tuesday). Looks like it was re-arsenaled at some point in its life and was caked in so much cosmoline. I spent an hour cleaning it on my lunch break with simple green and engine degreaser. Also got a patch, a decal and a sling as I wait for my Service Grade.

Anyone know how to get the cosmoline out of the canvas part of the sheath? EDIT: Paint thinner or mineral spirits seem to work well -- took some soaking and heat to get enough out.

Also any way to roughly date it?

But thank you to the CMP. I'll order a few more. Didn't know the $6.99 shipping charge was for 2-day!

cosmoline

Try putting in Black trash bag and put out in Hot sun. This work great on stock and I don't see why it would not work on the webbing. Joe

Pretty sure I'll try that on the next one. Thanks for the idea! I'll put a layer of paper towel under it to soak it up.

I know this terrifies some and no one should use it if you are not comfortable with it but gasoline and a two dollar chip brush makes fast work of removing cosmoline. Oil your parts when you finish.

If you do not mind all the paint stripped off the sheath, try soaking yours in oxiclean. worked well on my danish made sheath, canvas looks great comparably; minor rust was gone, and really ugly thick paint also pealed off! so far no ill effects. Just another way to clean.

I ordered 2 of these with the M7's I ordered. One is an Imperial which looks to be new and the other is a Milpar that was caked with grease/cosmo and has a number stamped on base. Took the CMP a few weeks to ship this order.

I soaked mine in hot water and Dawn dishwashing soap. The hotter the better and just let it sit. Not perfect but works a little.

I may have used a stock pot and boiled a few on the stove in our new kitchen.... on an unrelated subject does anyone know how to calm a wife down? Something about cosmoline all over the counters or something...

Take the Wife to the Jewelry store, that should calm her down......

BTW, I was in Nampa for a Wedding in July.
