Finnish M39 in competition

Ive got the Finn M39 bug and thinking of getting a hold of one. I have a M28 that shoots so so. I was wondering if these are ever used in cmp shoots, are they as good as they say when it come to accuracy?

Two years ago, I shot the vintage sniper match at Camp Perry with a Fin. He shot a Finnish sniper rifle with a Chinese three power repro scope that he had completely reworked. His rifle looked pretty beat, cracked stock, etc. He shot the best individual score in the match.....beat everybody! Good Shooting. ...

M39s are certainly capable enough...saw one or two at Eastern games this year..

I've got one had it a very long time now paid $70.00 for it at least 20 years ago and it will outshoot a lot of Military rifles I have in my collection, its also been counterbored but thats not affected the accuracy in any negative way.

The M39 can be very accurate. The condition of rifles in the market varies widely. I have competed with one when there were more vintage matches locally. Usually used it late in the season when I ran low on handloading time for my K-31, as mine was quite accurate with a certain lot of Czech surplus ammunition.

Pros- quite stable and well balanced in offhand, good sling mounting points, very nice sight picture on SR2. Usually very good 2-stage trigger pull.

Cons-slow reload time due to the so-so charger loading system, some position breakdown while working the bolt handle due to it's position.

Not as refined or easy to shoot as my K-31s, but I was able to hold 10 when I did things right with decent X count and won a couple of matches. Never really played with handloads in this rifle. A fellow shooter borrowed it to shoot a match, and hammered 10s with a D166 Lapua bullet handload once he found the zero.

thanks for the info, yea I got mine the other day and took it to the range. I want to try the Lapua D166 but I cant find any in stock. I ordered Sierra Match for it, ive heard that shoots well too in these Finn Guns

Grafs has many Lapua bullets in stock. The D46 bullet is no slouch out of the Finns too. The Lapuas aren't cheap...

You may want to slug your barrel. Most Finnish Mosins are not .308 diameter.

Assuming your bore is in the .310-.311 range, look into the Hornady or Speer 150SP and the PRVI .311 FMJBT. Have had good accuracy with these bullets in various mosins and they would be plenty to 200 yards.
