1956 Winchester M70 NM

Picked up a very nice 1956 US property marked Winchester Model 70 National Match rifle. Any idea where I might find serial number records to hopefully get this rifle verified? I did look on the Cody website but is seems their info on M70's is sparse at best...
Serial number is 398567.

Thanks!

Kenny

M70 target

I have been looking for years on a Winchester M70 Target in 30-06 cal serial number 74654. I know it was a USN rifle sold with a small lot on auction around 1968, yet unable to find a record

Kenny . . . .

According to the table of serials listed in Roger Rule’s epic tomb of the M70, serial 398567 was struck in February, 1957.

Very interesting, thanks! I guess it was made for the 1957 National Matches...

Kenny. . . .

Is the barrel stamped with the 1956 date? (Under the wood, just ahead of the receiver)

Is it actually a National Match model or Target model? The difference being the NM had a standard weight barrel with the Marksman stock vs. the target-weight barrel.

I've traced quite a few of these around the 400k serial range. All I've traced came back to property of the US Army or National Guard.

I really suspect if I ran this one, I would probably find the same.

The main problem on these, the military only has records on these serials back to 1975. So usually what you see when you run one is, they are in storage at some Army depot. Usually Anniston. Then turned over to the CMP for sale.

I just put in a request to run it Kenny. It will take up to 2 weeks, but we will find out where it's been since about 1975. It will most likely just show up in inventory at somewhere with the Army and sold by the cmp but we will know for sure soon.
