For military calibers/reasonable pricing, IMR 4895.

i used surplus 4895 in 30.06 when it was available, but having used varget in competition .308 and .223, decided it was better than most and as good as the best. so it's my choice for .223,.308, 30.06. just wish i could use it for 7.62AK and .30 carbine. I've got WAY too many bits and pieces of powder from chasing the "perfect" powder

Varget. Fairly clean and great over a wide range of temperatures.

I load 30-06, .308, .222, .223, and .243. Every one of them get a dose of IMR 4064.

Reloder 15 is good in most rifles.Sometimes its a matter of what you can find for sale.

I currently use H4895 in 223 and Viht N540 in 308. I have been using IMR 4895 for 30-06. The long pieces of both types of 4895 as well as 4064 don't meter as well as the N540 in my powder dropper and I hate weighing every load. The 748 I've used meters good but seems to be pretty "dirty" and I don't like it for the normal 88 shot NRA coarse. I've never used the Varget but beleive it is a short grained stick like N540.

Try Hodgdon Benchmark for 223 and light (up to 155gr) 308 loads. Meters like ball powders and perfect for those two cartridges. Good Shooting.......
