K31 or 1903A3 For a Bolt Gun to use in CMP Games

I am in the market for a bolt action rifle that I want to use for CMP Games. I shot with a gentlemen at the Eastern Games who had a K31; I was very impressed with the accuracy and the overall function of the weapon. The history behind the K31 is fascinating, too. I was also impressed with the price point of the rifle. I also know that the 03A3 has a phenomenal reputation for accuracy (not quite as legendary as the K31), and seems to be the standard weapon of choice for CMP Games when it comes to bolt guns. What is also attractive is the 30-06 round commonality and availability, which is a big plus for my opinion over the K31 (I cringe at the thought of buying an odd caliber weapon when I just eliminated odd calibers a from my collection). The K31 is also creeping up on price to an 03A3 as well so the price point difference is becoming less.

What should get, K31 or a 03A3?

I am sure you are aware that the K31 can only be used in the Vintage rifle match and the 03A3 in the Springfield match.
That being said, I agree with Skeet, find a good one of each.

This. Use the K31 for vintage military and the 03a3 for the Springfield match

You can use the 03a3 in vintage as well though, no?

If I had to choose one, I'd probably go with the peep sights of the 03a3...that being said, my k31 is probably my favourite bolt action. The design is just so awesome...right down to the trigger group. I just took mine all apart recently just to look at all the pieces and reassemble!

If only going to buy one ... buy the 03-A3. Down the road, you will never have a problem with the 03-A3 that cannot be fixed with available parts, barrels, etc. Ammunition and components will always be available at rational prices. Day in and day out, the sights on the 03-A3 are superior to any open sight on any rifle regardless of when or where designed/produced. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

You cannot use a A3 in CMP Vintage class. OP cited many of the reasons to choose the A3. I agree and while the K31 rightfully has a following for Vintage class, I much prefer the 1917, again for many of the reason already listed. Good Shooting. ...

Didn't know you couldn't use the A3 in vintage rifle. What kind of MOA should I expect from a non-match conditioned A3? What are the cartridge limitations (are they similar to the Garand)?

ceresco 10-06-2017 09:06 AM

Expect 2" at 100yds from bolt rifles with good bores, quality ammo and no other issues. There are no cartridge limitations with an A3. Try a good 110gr varmint bullet at 2900fps. I shot 9Xs at 100 yds SR1) with my A3--#10 was called out. Good Shooting. ...
