Well it would be a shooter for sure since the wrapper is open...Is that the original correct scope for those?

I'd almost like a poll to see how many people would shoot it versus keeping it unsullied.

This is going to go for big bucks.

RedSpecial 03-12-2018 08:49 AM

Shoot it!

Oh Geesh, I would love to have that one in my collection, It would never come out of the wrap, That's why you have two, One to shoot and one like that to save with the rest of the queens in the back of the safe.

Is that the wrapping it comes from the factory or was it repacked?

$3303 at current post.

XM3 is at $3000

Is that the original correct scope for those?

Likely no.

Scope originally was a black matte finish Redfield 3x9 I believe. Looks like a rebuild based on the accessible few photos?

Discussion on another forum says this may be a 1979 or 1980 presentation rifle.

The serial number is one different (last digit ie consecutive)
"It is well beyond the SN range of the contract rifles, around 1980 I think. There is a picture in a Senich book (The One Round War) of an M40 that is one digit off in SN, the last number in fact, that was a presentation rifle so I suspect that may be what this is. It is not a contract rifle for VN. "

" Reading a little further, there were 3 such presentation rifles made in 79, 80, and 81 so that probably explains this one being only one number off the one in the book."

More info.

"Remington Model 700 sniper rifle awarded to Marine marksman John W. Johnson for winning the National Trophy Individual Match at Camp Perry, Ohio, in 1981. The presentation rifle (serial no. 6257207) bears all the characteristics of a USMC sniping rilfe dating from 1969. At least three other Remington M700/M40 rifles were awarded under similar circumstances - in 1979, 1980 and 1981."

"As a matter of interest, the other M700 sniper rifle presented in 1981 (serial no. 6257276) was also awarded to a member of the USMC rifle team."
