7 DEC North store visit

Folks,

Had a chance to stop by the North store on my way back to Detroit. The racks were full.

Zero bolt action

Looked like a dozen air guns available.
Usual M1C and Ds were all still there.
Plenty of 308 IHC rebuilds
Maybe a dozen IHC service in new wood

Now the rest of the story.....the racks were full as I said. The rifles were rough. Lots of pitting and rust and huge amounts of dirt and grime. Broken rear sight on an HRA that looked like it sat in a puddle of water for years. They appeared to me to be the Philippine returns.
The weather and their military were not kind to them. I was sad looking at the shape they were in. Many were rebarreled and put back together with their old parts and I just thought it was bad. The parts were really beat up and the rifle had new wood and a new barrel.

I tried to find a gem. I brought home a field grade with GI wood and lockbar sights but her buttplate is horribly loose and the finish is pretty rough. I will try to post some before and after pics.

I know I will get beat up for saying this stuff on here but it was really sad for me to see those rifles and the condition they were in. They really are scraping the bottom of the barrel.

As usual the staff was friendly and knowledgeable and great to talk with. Good luck with your searches.

Thanks for your post. Getting ready to make a visit myself. Not a bad report. You took home what I am looking for, even with the bad butt plate.

Thank you again for the post.

Can you imagine what this rifle would say if it could talk???

Tommiep54 12-07-2019 08:49 PM

I see a faint cartouche or rebuild stamp on the left side of the stock.

How much were these rifles?

hogfamily 12-07-2019 09:50 PM

I would take that rifle anytime.
Love the stock.
Nothing on that rifle that won't clean up well.

reaper36a 12-07-2019 09:58 PM

Field grade. 650.

They had rack grade too.

Were they sold out of service grades?

reaper36a 12-08-2019 09:20 AM

About six, all in new wood. Nothing exciting about them if I recall. All SA with a mix of parts.

Any idea what the cartouche initials are?

OG and something in a box that is VERY faint.

Lead dipped heal??

reaper36a 12-08-2019 07:57 PM

Yes, looks to be that way. The rest of the finish on the receiver reminds me of that case hardened stuff on Krags. Odd

That will be pretty easy to clean up. I would take that Field Grade any day. What are the TE/ME?

That could be the original type 2 lockbar set. Is the op rod unmodified? That wood looks great and I can see part of the SA/GHS stamp. jackpot on that one..... Wobbly buttplate should not be a concern at all. You should be able to get it tight.

From the looks of the pics, you are going to have a hard time getting many to feel really sorry for this rifle. You really scored.

Tommiep54 12-08-2019 08:12 PM

I was thinking that might be a faint GHS, nice score!

0 and 1 on a SA 55 barrel.

You guys have better eyes than me! I can just see the box. I have the parts soaking and I have already cleaned up the wood. Not sure what was on the rifle but it was slimy nasty sticky stuff. Not cosmoline, as that is my cologne so I know it anywhere. Some rust on the spring for the hammer. I think the lockbar sights are original. OPROD has the cut. So I think it went through a rebuild.

TSimonetti 12-08-2019 08:59 PM

Hope you will show some after pics. That rifle has tons of potential and your barrel is absolutely mint. That should have been a Service Grade

reaper36a 12-09-2019 04:10 PM

Cleaned her up.

Winner !

Beautiful. Now that it's cleaned up they were probably correct in making this a Field Grade, but you should be able to shoot well with that. The GI stock really completes it. I don't think it would look nearly as good with new a CMP stock set. Nice score on the correct lockbars and the GHS stock and the super new barrel.

My recent Field Grade holds the 9/10 ring pretty easily and I'm very happy with it. The barrel numbers are not nearly as good as yours though. You wanted a Gem and you found one.

How is the stock lockup?

reaper36a 12-09-2019 11:17 PM

Oddly enough tight. This was certainly a diamond in the rough.

I agree it looks sorta typical for a Philippine Return but I have found that most will clean up reasonably well and once you put a bit of elbow grease into the stock you might be surprised and like the color.
This also has the additional neat feature in that there is a Winchester out there somewhere with the same serial number.
