springfield question

Simple question:

Did the military ever mount/make scoped '03A3's? I thought it was just A4's that were originally scoped...

Mike D 07-13-2010 10:41 PM

The M1903A4 was marked Model 03-A3. There was never an A4 stamp. Just a "designation".

As Mike said, the M1903A4 was not marked as such - however, the markings were "split" to clear the scope mount.

Rick

Can you show us a picture of the split? Thanks

John's getting technical! :D

And I guess technically, this would be a Rem. or SC question, not Springfield!

If you look at the pics in this auction, you will see the split stampings. There are NO stampings underneath the scope base. http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=178830360

O ok. I see now. So is that a fool proof way id'ing a sniper model?

Mike D 07-14-2010 09:34 AM

Yes, ALL A4's were stamped in that manner. There were also only 3 serial # blocks assigned to A4 production.

1st - 3407088-3427087
2nd - 4000001-4015000
3rd - 4992001-5784000

A3 production overran the 2nd block, causing duplicate serial #'s. To correct this, the A4's were stamped with a Z prefix. A4 production from that block was suspended because of this. About 3000 actually made from that block.

Only a little over 6,000 were produced from the 3rd block.
