They were often coated with BLO post war or on this side of the ocean. The black worked into the summerwood gives the pine tar away. You also see it on vintage scandianavian woodwork, especially farm tools and horse/oxen cartage. Was a favorite coating for the Sauna bench. Very impervious to water and durable, but it is subject to drying. There's a few threads devoted to restoring the finish on SR.com.
