Welcome to the forum Alex!
Advice? Buy lots of ammo!

The CMP Special in .308 is a great shooting rifle...you will enjoy it.

Seriously, regarding the advice, here is some info passed on to others who have made a similar jump...

Once you receive it, make sure you disassemble it, inspect, clean (if needed) and properly lube. Most Specials will arrive very dry, so pay particular attention to the lube portion. Good general rule: if it slides, grease it; if it rotates, oil it (except the hammer and sear hooks!!!).
Here are links from a couple of sites to assist:
http://www.civilianmarksmanship.com/
http://www.garandgear.com/how-to-grease-your-m1-garand

NOTE: Peruse the Garandgear website and you'll find several other related links to the care and mx of your rifle.
You should not have to detail strip your rifle to the degree outlined at either the CMP or Garandgear site, such as the stock (particularly the handguards) or the gas cylinder...at most, the feeding and operation parts (op rod, follower, follower rod/arm, bullet guide, op rod catch, etc), possibly the bolt and trigger assembly, depending on functional test and inspection. The Specials have collector grade parts and SHOULD require minimal attention outside of proper lube.
If you do any detail stripping, pay particular attention to the notes and cautions on both sites! They are highlighted as those are hard-earned lessons and they are trying to spare others similar angst, lost parts...and/or pain!

And the new stocks on these Specials generally require some fitting/trimming, at least in a few key areas where contact with the trigger, firing pin and op rod are of concern. Here are a couple of excellent threads to assist you with this:

Any questions/concerns, lots of great folks to help out here in either the Garand or Ask Each Other sections.

Again, welcome and good luck,
Rob
