The two grooves cut into the wooden handles started with the British Pattern 14 Enfield rifle. They were to distinguish that bayonet from the one they used on the SMLE.

The grooves were continued when the US 1917 Enfield was produced because they were the same bayonet as for the P 14, and they could also be differentiated from the US model 1905 bayonet.
