Post #4 above shows an assortment of tools, not all of which would fit in an M1 rifle stock at once. The Reader's Digest version of the story is that one of the two stock holes holds an oiler tube - either plastic or nickel-plated brass; and the other holds either an M3A1 tool (or variant thereof) or a set of sectioned cleaning rods.

The two M3 tools (with slotted tip or with a brush) are different versions of the same tool. The brush equipped version is called the M3A1 and replaced the slotted patch holder version which was called the M3.
