Try some denatured alcohol on it first to make sure it isn't just old school varnish. If it is, denatured alcohol is a bit easier to use and doesn't totally strip it. Just a thought. I used it on a couple of stocks that were shiny, as they were varnished. If polyurethane, then a stripper you'll need...and not the fun kind.
