Little update. I just had my serial number assigned on the EStore.

Quote:
RM1SERVICE M1 Garand Service Grade
Serial:1783xxx
No manufacture was listed, however a brief Google search shows this as a Springfield July 1943. One site said that there might be Winchester serials in this range, but I don't think CMP has had any WRAs for awhile.

I had sticky noted "USGI Walnut with Low Serial Number". So far so good!

Tracking number was also assigned. If the package gets picked up today, it says it will arrive Priority overnight on Monday 11/24.

Can't wait!

I don't have ammo or clips yet. I picked up the grease tube from GarandGear and a soft case for the range. I wasn't expecting this until December at the earliest!

That's awesome!, I should have placed an order instead of relying on GB lol. Oh well lesson learned. I too ordered the grease tube from garandgear, I picked up the gas plug too.

Would you say the gas plug is needed? I don't plan on shooting anything that is not surplus ammo or the 150 grain garand commercial ammo (like prvi partizan or American Eagle).

Since I'm getting a 1943 Garand, it'd probably only be proper to get a nice leather 1907 sling.

Not for your set up, I want to shoot anything I want, but I'm not gonna go with crazy high power stuff but it'll be nice to have that peace of mind. They put a lot of research into it and it got great reviews. Just MHO

My Garand arrived today! I sent my order off by priority mail on 11/12, and it arrived today 11/24. That's a 12 day turn around. Crazy!

I'll share some pictures below. I haven't had time to field strip and document all the parts, but i'll certainly be doing it. I had stick noted on my order form asking for a "USGI Walnut stock with no rack number, and a low serial number if possible". I got exactly that!

Picture time (sorry if they are a little blurry, don't have the best camera, and I was excited...)

First opened my case to find this:

The stock is a little dinged up. No noticeable cracks, but many dings and gouges. It's from July 1943, so I'd expect it to be in less than perfect condition. No cartouches except for single serif P on pistol grip and sanserif "RA-P" on bottom. From what I've read, an original stock for Springfield should have two ordinance wheels. The RA-P is a Raritan Arsenal rebuild. Any significance to that? Just a replaced stock? Color is beautiful:

Barrel inscription is "3SA345". If I remember correct this means I have a 1945 barrel? From what I can tell, it looks great! I will inspect it closer soon.

Bolt is an IHC "D6528287 IHC". Has a sincle "U" and a ding on the metal from where I think the checked the hardness?

Sights - windage has been grease penciled and says "DHC", elevation says "SMC"

A look at the muzzle and gas plug:

To celebrate the new addition to the family, I ordered a soft case from Garand gear along with an an oil tube for the butt stock. Opened a cold American beer from the fridge to celebrate. Wiped her down with a little Ballistol to get some of the junk off the wood. beautiful walnut stock. Wish it wasn't so dinged up, but she'll do.

Any input from Garand experts here would be helpful! I look forward to taking her apart and learning more about her!

That wood looks great. I know how to get rid of dents and finds but lately I just leave them alone. I don't like using stains and I find it never had the same color once you steam it to raise dents.

Congrats!

Great looking Garand! I also just got my first (Oct '43). My stock was nearly black. Scrubbed it good with mineral spirits to remove as much gunk as possible and gave it a nice coat of BLO. Starting to get that beautiful red color that you stock has.

Congrats!
