As John said, no Remington M1903 "sniper rifles" and apparently, the story of Marines carrying early Remington M1903s on Guadalcanal is just that.

By August of 42, over 200 thousand of them had been produced so I would think it possible that some were issued to the Marines, as the landing occurred in August 1942. Regards, Rick. Last edited by sakorick; 10-30-2019 at 05:28 AM. |

To my knowledge there have been no "Marine" Remington M1903s discovered. Nothing was said that this theory was based on talks with veterans or any other hard information.

Three Marines on Guadalcanal with rifles. The guy on the R side of the pic doesn't have a canteen but he has a bayonet! General John J. Blackjack Pershing said " The deadliest weapon in the World is a US Marine with his rifle."

...which were almost certainly Springfields or Rock Islands.

As Rick said, Remington M1903's exhibiting evidence of USMC issuance are very scarce. Few, if any, were used by Marines in the Guadalcanal campaign.

One theory I had (which would depend on when the New Zealand Lend/Lease M1903s arrived) is the possibility that the Marines (who were briefly in New Zealand before landing on Guadalcanal) might have "appropriated" a handful. Maybe that's where the story started.
