so if there is no hit on SRS for M1 serial number 8269, there is no other way to track down history of rifle? thanks for your help

There may be no history even with a hit.

SRS means there was a document, etc that listed the serial number and make of a particular firearm. Could be just a repair order, or inspection. In some cases its the DCM sales document to a private citizen or military member.
