I suspect that you can do it either way but reload by magazine change is much quicker and quicker means more time to shoot.

In the current rule book, on page 89 is says "Rapid-Fire Loading. Loading for each event must be done according to the loading procedures specified in the specific rules for these events."

The problem is, if you look at the Annex B, Highpower Firing Procedures on page 90, it does not say how to load for the rapid fire stages.

I would do as Rickgman suggests and do a mag change rather than stripper clips.

I dont have a lot of time on the M1a platform in matches. I find the mag change a bit cumbersome. I shoot cmp games with all sorts of platforms and load "from the top" on almost all of them.
I also shoot lefty not that it matters much with the mag release location on the M1a.
Im not sure if the mag vs clip is faster or slower?
We will see once im done with my build?

IMO: If you practice the mag change, you will get consistent results. If you use a charger, you will never be certain that it will go well. Cartridges tend to hang up, spill out or fail to align properly in the magazine. The 7.62 chargers often have heavy parkerizing and drag excessively on the case rims. I have never seen a M1A competitor use chargers in a match. One may assume there is a reason. Practice! Good Shooting. ..

They "rock" in - as opposed to inserting straight in like a pistol or AR. Once you get the hang of it it's easy.

If the finish on the magazines is rough, that can easily be cured by applying some light oil to 000 steel wool and rub down the magazines. Also, look for any spots in the mag well where rubbing might be occuring. If there is a high spot, that might need to be carefully filed down. As la Fiere noted, M14 magazines "rock" into place and that is significantly different than M16/M4 magazine which are inserted straight. In one regard, the M14 magazine design is superior - when rocking the magazine into place, the leverage is such that it makes it very easy to insert a fully loaded magazine against a closed bolt. Also, you know for sure that the magazine is fully seated since there is an audible and felt click when it is seated.
