Smith Enterprise is a top M14 armorer / builder, they will build exactly what you want.

When it comes to receivers, Cast vs. Forged vs. Billet is less
important than the dimensional correctness of the receiver.

Or do I get a base model Springfield M1A and send it to one of the top builders to work their magic on it?

I'm not shooting in the sandbox (unless I catch a cat in it!), so I don't need "sandbox" level durability, but I still want that as well.

Ideas / references to builders? I don't mind spending for top quality.

After my not so great experience with Springfield years ago, I had Smith Enterprise custom build a total of 5 different M14s for me.
All of them are reliable and accurate, even after running 2000 rounds through them. I spent my money on top quality - SEI delivered.

Never trust anyone that badmouths another company about something they were not personally involved in.

My all time favorite receivers for dream builds are heel stamped Poly Tech.
Not easily procured, but well worth the effort.

If I am not building it myself Ted Brown is one of the guys I would trust without a doubt to build exactly what you want.

Personally I would not give Smith a penny of my money.
It's not cool suing people for bad PR.

Perhaps a look at Jon Wolfe is in order here in NC.

Jon Wolfe and Company are great people to deal with, doing out standing work on several M14s they built for me, if they can squeeze me in will be building me a third.

Just build it on your own! Unlike some others, you can own the bragging rights and can claim to be the best builder too. As far as I’m concerned, I’m the best builder of MY rifles.

This is not a bad idea, especially if you find an older M1A built with at least some GI parts.

The M1A platform can be a money pit and there is a point of diminishing returns if you are trying to make it MOA / sub MOA. A correct built rifle (think service rifle) will shoot better than most people behind it.

If you are a competitive shooter and can call your shots spending the extra time and money tweaking your rifle will help your scores. If you are shooting at a "marksman" level a double lugged gun that shoots one hole groups will not make you a master or high master.

Buy or build something and go shooting.
