Default Make your own sight smoker

I remember this idea from a Forum member and tried it myself. Works Great and made it from what I had on my loading bench.

You will need: A empty 30.06 case with the primer still in.

The neck or sleeve trim from a 100% cotton T-shirt,( for the wick).

Mineral spirits or something similar. NOT GASOLINE, COLEMAN FUEL OR anything highly combustible.

The cap from a Sharpie fine point marker.

Directions
Cut a 4 inch strip of shirt trim. Fill the cartridge case half full of accelerant. Twist in the shirt trim until all but a little is above the case mouth.
Light with match or lighter. Hold flame under sight until sufficiently blackened. Blow out flame and cover with Sharpie cap .

Why not put the mineral spirits in the Zippo and be done with it.

The mineral spirits won't ignite with the striker. I tried that first.

Great now i have to remeber lighters and matches....

Cool "hack" i will make one and ask one of the guys who smoke for a light!

The new lighters are awful and matches have become somewhat of a novelty

I carry a empty & clean peanut butter jar with Q-Tips in it, along with a small plastic bottle of Rem Oil, and a bic lighter.

Place 3 drops of Rem Oil on the Q-Tip and light it with the bic (Note: if you use more than 3 drops the oil and fire will run down the stem and get your fingers - ouch!!!). Will burn for approx. 10-15 seconds and give a very nice black soot on your sights. Everything is cheap and it is all self contained in the empty (clean) peanut butter plastic bottle.

I got this idea from this forum several years ago and it has worked well for me and several other guys at the CMP games in Oklahoma.

Reminded me of when the State Hwy Comm used those in the 60's at road construction sights. Imagine a time when you could put about 2 dozen out there and they would still be there the next morning.

Good Hack OP

My dad said when he was in the marines (1957) they just mixed some diesel fuel with their zippo lighter fluid to make it burn dirty. - I like the 30-06 shell idea. you can play around with different fuels, and use what you have on hand.
