Default Cmp 1911

I just got in a Colt 1911 s/n 237717. I know it's a 1918 model but I was wondering if anyone would have any more info based on the serial number and photos.
Thanks,
Tom

See the post at the top of the forum titled “Shipment Info on Pistols”.

Just an FYI and to keep 1911 folks from jumping on you
but its a model of 1911 - Likely upgraded to 1911a1 specifications
and year made was in 1918

From the pictures, the only thing I see upgraded to 1911a1 are the grips. The long trigger, no cut out to shorten trigger reach, flat mainspring housing, wide spur hammer and 1911 slide are all 1911. What am I missing. I only own two 1911A1s and am not an expert. Thanks.

The slide stop is 1911A1.

The are only five (5) differences between the M1911 & the M1911A1.

1. The tang of the grip safety was extended.
2. A clearance cut was made on the receiver.
3. The mainspring housing was knurled & raised.
4. The face of the trigger was knurled & cut back.
5. The width of the front sight was increased. (.058" on the Improved Model 1911 and to .080" on WWII M1911A1s)

The model designation was changed to M1911A1 in 1926.

The only significant difference is the clearance cuts on the RECEIVER.

The other parts are all interchangeable.

Most of the ARMY MUSEUM SYSTEM weapons turning up are hybrids built by ARSENALS & DEPOTS in late WWII (or post-WWII).

BUT...

You appear to have lucked out and snagged yourself a high mileage M1911 (except for the replacement grips & the MODEL 1924 slide stop)!!!

Oh yeah...I dug my facts out of CLAWSON (3rd Edition) Pages 31 -34.
