Default avatars?

I uploaded an avatar and it shows in my profile but not on posts. Are they allowed?

Default I don't think so...

That meanie Orest says "No" even though users have the option to turn them off. Something about how they don't contribute to CMP discussions. Too bad, so sad.

Not the webmaster.....

Under my CP, I don't find a selection for editing one's avatar.
Leaves me thinking they disabled it's use.

Under the FAQ, a link leads me to the avatar area of my CP, and it's selected to "Do not use an avatar" , and can't not be changed..

I do find on my CP, "Edit Profile Picture", which is not the avatar.
The profile pix should only show when someone goes and looks at your profile, but not on posts (which is where an avatar shows).

So I think I can assume, avatars are turned off.
And Profile pix are turned on.

FYI, incase they do turn on avatar.... on your CP...
Click on "Edit Options".
Scroll down to "Thread Display Options"
And on my , the default was that "Show Avatars" was not checked.
So if they ever do turn on avatars, to see them, you would need to check that and scroll down further and and click "Save Changes".

How come some of the old avatars still show up? But only show when you are looged out.

Check out this post while not logged in - See the IH avatar? http://www.thecmp.org/forums/showthread.php?t=731

I logged out , cleared my cookies, and went to that thread, not being logged in.And I don't see avatars showing next to anyone's name.
I see a IH logo in the middle of a thread, a cut and past from the old forum, in the body of a posting.... but that is not an avatar , as in for the user for this forum. It's just a imagine in that thread.....

I also see it when I'm logged in.

If you are not seeing that IH logo when logged in, but do see it when your logged out, it's because you didn't set your options to show graphics...

todo soo....

To be able to see the images in a thread (when logged in)...

After logging in, got to the "User CP" up in the menu.
Go down to
"edit options"

Now scroll down to...
"Thread Display Options" and find "Visible Post Elements"
and check the box next to"Show Images"

"Show Images (including attached images and images in [IMG] code)"

Then scroll down and click
"Save Changes"...

And if the person did the "insert image tag" correctly, you'll be seeing images. This should also allow you to post pictures as images rather than links, using the "Insert Image" icon.

Cool! Thanks for the step-by-step, I am still learning the system....

Got it set so I can see the graphics while logged-in now.

So this brings up another question, what's to stop someone from just using a graphic in their signature line each post. Isn't that a form of avatar?

Glad I was of help.

I had my settings set to "not show signatures", so I don't need to see them for my own reasons.

I enabled that, and it seems from some testing I've done, the img tags are not enabled in the signature line, and the uploading of graphics is not enabled as well.
So nope, doesn't seem one can express themselves that way either.

I agree it makes no sense. All they have to do is limit the size and they become unobtrusive. And every body that wants to see them has to opt-in first. No-brainer.

The more user, the more avatars, the more graphics, the slower the forum, the more bandwidth the CMP has to pay for.

Rather have better Garand Rifle (and hopefully Greek Ammo) prices, or avatars?

You are assuming causality which has not been demonstrated.
Remote hosting of avatars is indeed possible and costs nothing in bandwidth. If they just don't want avatars on the board that is one thing, but bandwidth and costs are NOT it.
