Not a rumor. I got the information from Scott Duff's Post War Garand book. He interviewed a former H & R employee who said that there were some rifles that didn't meet standards. Instead of pulling the serial numbers and going on, H & R destroyed the defective receivers and reused the serial numbers on new receivers.

Thank you for the information regarding the heat lot numbers. It cleared alot of things up.

Duff writes, "During this period, H&R encountered a rash of broken firing pins during endurance testing, which resulted in the rejection of a large lot of M1's. Investigations indicated that the firing pin clearance cut in the receiver was off location and was causing the component breakage."

Duff goes on to write, "A conversation with a former H&R employee revealed that it was H&R's policy that if a lot of M1 Rifles were rejected due to the receiver, the receivers were scrapped and the serial numbers reused on other rifles."
Duff never indicates that the "receiver" problems were related to heat lots. In this case it was the "firing pin clearance cut in the receiver", and nothing to do with a heat lot.

Am I getting senile or did I once see a chart posted here that showed serial numbers higher than the 5.61 million range?

I have SN 4789011 which has an SA barrel dated 1/55 with chamber in the white. From the charts, this should have an HRA barrel around 6-54ish. I was just wondering, could this SA barrel be original to the rifle?

I'll check the receiver leg later but I seem to think it went through a rebuild at SA in the mid 60's.

It also has a 1/2" DAS stock with matching color handguards. Again, this rifle should have a 3/8" DAS according to http://www.trfindley.com/pgsnstmpsm1.html.

Could this stock be original as well???

I'd appreciate any thoughts on the subject.
