Default 1911 "tanker" holster

So my son wants a 1911 tanker style holster. He got the flyer out of the cmp case with the 1911. So is desantis the way to go? Or can you still buy us issue ones in good shape? Doesn't need to be wwii correct or anything. Thanks for any help on where to buy a good one

Do a search for either M3 Holster or the M7 Holster (later version). Plenty of them out there, originals and repros. On originals, be sure to check the snaps, especially the bottom snap (belt strap). Corrosion (verdigris) builds up between the leather and pushes the snap off. Repaired quite a few over the years and this is a common problem.

IMO,the best one I've found is the El Paso Saddlery one. You can get an unmarked one from Midway right now.

There are tons of surplus one side around. Back when my tank unit had 1911’s they had literally hundreds of them. When we transitioned to beretta it was found most would accommodate the beretta. Some guys were still using them when we deployed to Afghanistan in ‘08. I really don’t see a reason to spend on a new El Paso when with a little searching the used serviceable surplus ones can usually be found for 20-30 bucks. I say go to a bunch of old gun and pawn shops and you can usually find one in the mixed used holster box just about every shop seems to have

Side note: the M3 .. an original in mint condition was my choice to take to Viet Nam and it served me well. If you carry a 1911 and want a shoulder holster that is simple, and functional in the field , the M3 is outstanding.
