Default Underwood B

One of the pics shows a Underwood with a B beneath the serial number. Curious what the B under the serial number indicates. I have one as well and not sure.

Thanks

Tex, from what I have found out your receiver was made by Singer Mfg. Co., a subcontractor, for Underwood. Nice find!

Default 1,455,XXX NPM B/R Build complete

My 1,455,XXX NPM B/R Build complete

Here are the results of my second of three B/R projects. The STP Prod is in the books already and I still have a Rock-Ola to go.
As with the last project I was not going for a 100% correct collector piece, but instead just one that had some amount of correctness, looked clean and relatively matched cosmetically, and lastly had a chance of shooting well.

I’m not sure if I hit that goal or not, but I’m pretty happy.

I didn't do as well price wise as the last, but still around the $500 mark including the value of what I had on hand.

There is the overview:

1,455,XXX NPM– tagged salvage with no further detail
- Underwood Barrel dated 1-43 – MW=1.5 but a fair amount of crud (that all came out!)
- I.R CO. type II rear sight
- S.A. type III front sight
- Circle A type III Band

N11 type II bolt (or double struck N1?)
- W.I. extractor
- I.N pin

N9 type II housing
- SN trigger
- I.K. hammer
- B.I. sear
- WA mag catch
- M horseshoe flip safety

N9 (maybe N8?) type II slide

Birch M2 "Y" marked stock – stained with Chestnut Ridge military stain
- Unmarked 4 rivet walnut handguard
- Late inland butt plate
- P.N. recoil plate

This wasn't a CMP B/R purchase so my receiver and barrel cost a bit more. Cost includes shipping.
http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=38680

Un-Quality receiver: $325
Inland 10-43 barrel, MW 1.5: $200 GB
Front sight & parts: pulled from another purchased barrel
GE-Q bolt, NL-Q pin, ST-Q extractor: $120 GB
Type 2 rear sight: $36 Collector Source
Q-NL trigger housing: swapped out, dunno replacement cost
LT-Q trigger: swapped, dunno replacement cost
GE-Q sear: $18 trader
LT-Q hammer: included in large multiple item trader purchase
repro push button safety: $5
mag catch: on hand
high wood Underwood stock: swapped from rack Std Prod carbine which now has a $40 stock
RMC handguard: had swapped out for a $25 ebay handguard
Type 1A barrel band: $80 gun show
UN-Q slide: $50 trader
Recoil spring guide, pins, springs, etc: ~$20

Total is about $919 plus whatever I paid for the replacement trigger housing, trigger, and mag catch. Some of the parts used had been swaps from a long time ago, so some of the cost is buried in the past, but still listed here.

Front site, key, pin (Numrich): $31.85
Inland bolt marked IO4 (GB): $70.00
"IRCO 7160060" rear sight (The Collector Source): $37.00
High wood stock & handguard: swapped from Bavarian rack grade which now has a paratrooper stock
Type 3 barrel band (ebay): $19.99
Other various parts for a TOTAL: $447.84

Add a Korean M4 rubber handled bayonet (Liberty Tree): $30
Parkerized 15rd magazine (local gun show): $15
M8A1 Scabbard (local gun show): $10
Stock pouch (The Collector Source): $12.00
