Default Rear Handguard ?

I have this gorgeous figured walnut hand-guard I always assumed was SA. I just noticed today it has an X and V stamped in the underside flat edge like one would find on a carbine handguard. Any idea if they mean anything. I have seen plenty of Overtons stamped O on the back edge and have an early Winchester stamped with a 240 something in channel. Have not seen or noticed this before.
