Nice Rifle, looks like you did very well. For the sling try a black light or the night vision mode on a camcorder to read the marking.

Nice score , The stock is Winchester they marked that area of the stock with letters or numbers . I have several that are marked with a D , 3 , B , C . The early I-cut stocks wont have any marks in the slingwell either ...........

Yep, the site was staked on...but it appears to be original, as the stake marks match perfectly with marks on the site...

The rear sight is not original on this early production Winchester. The original sight would have been a flip sight. The adjustable rear sight was installed and staked at some point in time, years or perhaps even decades after it had left the factory.

It's a rifle I'd like to have. During rebuild they replaced the hammer and hammer spring too. It's remarkably nice looking and intact for having been upgraded though. Beautiful bolt.

The W in the slingwell is sometimes missing. It generally is oriented front to butt (open W toward the muzzle). Is the band a type 1 or 2? The sight staking on an original factory assembled type 2 or 3 sight generally is a single round punch front and back.
