Default Greatest Bolt Action Combat Rifle...

So Iím in the field right now and me and a couple of my guys had this debate last night and I thought Iíd see what answers I got here...

What would you argue is the greatest standard issue bolt action battle rifle in history and why? Not necessarily your favorite, but the best? For example; my favorite is the 1903a3 but I would never argue itís the best. When talking about the best I would have to say the Lee Enfield No4. Yes, the 1903, Finnish Mosinís,and the Swiss rifles were more accurate. Yes, the 1903 was better balanced. Yes, the Mausers were a stronger action. All that said however, when taken as a whole I still think the No4 beats them all. It is an accurate rifle with good balance even if it some other rifles beat it out in those categories. But itís also the fastest action fielded, is very reliable, and has twice the capacity of almost every other rifle fielded.

So the No4 is my pick... Whatís yours?

Tough to not choose the Mosin Nagant - what better way to arm ~20 million minimally-trained peasants to defend the motherland, without full industrialization ?

Agree with OP. Nothing more to add.

Yep, the No.4 Enfield gets my vote too. As you probably have heard (and this pertains to WWI and not WWII), there was assaying that went like this. "The Germans had the best sporting rifle in the 98 Mauser, the Americans had t he best target rifle in t he 03, and the Brits had the best battle rifle in the SMLE." The 03 is cool but it has some very delicate bits when it comes to battlefield use.

I also think the No.4 is the best for all the reasons the OP listed, plus the fact that it has very good sights, especially the adjustable ones.

Although I've never fired either Enfield, I would think the No.4 Mk1 is on equal footing with the No. 1 Mk3.

I've had all mentioned previously, but my favorite is the K31. Accurate, fast cycle rate, minimal recoil, great trigger and sights, and they are about as attractive as a boat paddle, so minimal potential for theft. I've sold or traded off all my non-U.S. Milsurps with the exception of the K31, and it ain't going nowhere.

The No4 has a heavy barrel and much better sights... At least when talking about the micrometer ladder sight.

Fastest action? Rimmed cartridges are not fast.
