Smile Brief report 8/10

I made my first trip to the SS 8/10/13. The folks working there are great and very helpful!

There was a decent selection of HRA SGSs ~20, though 2 are gone now thanks to my friend and I. Some "rusty" kimbers, many had the knife cut on wood but I saw one or two that did not, surface rust on barrels did not look too bad to my eye. Some m1 sniper variants, barrels, and receivers.

With permission I took a couple of store photos on my phone. Below is the link to them, I hope it works:

Thanks for rpt. & pics. Have you read about stock work that may be needed?

Thanks for posting. One picture is worth a thousand words. When I was there about, getting close to two years ago the place was packed with just about everything. Was a great day (for getting a bunch of sky miles on the Delta AMEX card)

I read some reports that if you dont like the finish it may need to be stripped and refinished. I read some folks had success with a 50/50 mineral spirits and BLO.

This is my first M1 so Im not sure yet if Im going to do anything to the CMP stock or just leave it alone.

I think it's a good idea to take it slow with your first Garand.
Some think you should not take the trigger grp out of a stock for awhile, let the new stk conform to the trigger grp. I have a couple HRA SGS and the trigger grp is a tight fit and takes some doing to
get the trigger guard to close getting it back together.
Here's a good post from Orlando:
http://forums.thecmp.org/showthread.php?t=41117

The part about the bolt hitting the rear of the stock is one of the first things to check.
On new CMP stks I wipe down with citrus solvent, it takes some of the stain and finish off the new stock to allow it to take up Tung oil.
I use citrus solvent and pure tung oil 50-50 then make my way up to 100 TO.
Good luck with your first, probably not your last Garand.

Thanks for the report. Looks like they still have a decent supply of Kimbers.
