Default 03/25/2011 North Store report

Today I took the day off so I could get to the North Store and see the HRA Service Grades with USGI wood. I am glad I did because they said all the service grades they had were on the floor this morning. By the time I left around 1:30pm, most of the HRA SGs with USGI wood were gone. And of the HRA SGs with orange stocks, not much of those are left either. If we heard is true, I would not expect much Saturday morning for HRA SGs.

When I got there at 8:25am, there were 12 people standing in line. When the doors opened, most people went immediately to the HRA SGs. I picked up one with a SA stock, HRA bolt, HRA sights, SA gas plug, 5.6m receiver, SA trigger group, SA op rod with MW 1, TE 2. Many were like that. Most everyone from the initial wave got at least one HRA. In the morning it was probably 60% USGI wood, 40% orange wood. By the time I left, it was mainly orange wood left.

Next I looked at all the HRA FGs. Nothing really stood out. One rifle had an IHC bolt. Don't see those too often. The SA FGs weren't anything special but mainly had very worn USGI wood. M1Ds had three boxed SA stocks. One stock was a sanded SA/NFR stock with SA rebuild mark on the stock. You can still find a good M1D there but we are heading towards more with the black repark.

Two racks of M1Cs. Some had the serial numbers marked on the side or underneath the mount. A few had an electropenciled number and some had mistmatched numbers. Most had 50s barrels and the only 44 barrel I noticed was worn out. Many of the M1Cs were in the 3.3m -3.6m serial number range. Many had HRA stocks. Nice rifles, nice metal, nice barrels, nice stocks, but hard to pay an extra $2000 for a scope mount. Sounded like 3 sold this morning.

I helped an older gentleman pick out a HRA correct and a SA correct. There was a rack of each. If you go through the SA correct rack, you will find half with barrels with 1 or less on the muzzle. Then within those rifles, you will find three or four with the best wood. Don't get me wrong, they are all nice, but if you are spending $1100, you want to find the very best in the rack. So essentially you would end up with 3 or 4 best ones in the rack to choose from. Same with the HRAs. To my surprise, it was easier to find a really, really good HRA correct today than the SA corrects - good wood, good muzzle, good metal. It just took more looking with the SA corrects.

There were WRA SGs, WRA FGs, WRA RGs, and WRA woodless. Pickings are getting a little slim here. Not as many good heel marks. There were 3 WRA SGs with new replacement barrels and I almost bought one. But then I was thinking I have two WRA receivers at home, a couple of new SA barrels, and a bunch of WRA parts, so I should invest my money in putting those together. $795 is a lot of money for a WRA receiver and SA parts.

There were a small number of Krag rifles on the racks. Took a few pictures. Very rough. Not my cup of tea.

Kimbers. Two racks of rustys and one rack of $600. A couple of consecutive pair in the rusty rack. I saw a 18k and a 19k serial numbered rifle in good condition. Almost bought one of those. They are in the right rack on the back wall in the 2 leftmost positions in the rack. Check them out first. In the $600 rack, some very interesting rifles. Many in the 12k serial number range. One has serial number 20001. I asked if they had serial number 20000, but no luck.

The service grade specials ($895) are still there. Very nice. One SA with a 5.79m serial number.

I bought a M1A stock. One barrel of them for $35. Mainly varnished birch stocks. I bought a 1.6m SA receiver. A big box of SA receivers on the counter. Take them out of the box and find one with no pitting. In the box of 20 or so receivers, probably 3-4 are in very good condition with very little pitting. I had a 1.9m picked out but decided to go with the 1.6m receiver since the receiver markings were more pronounced.

I started taking pictures after picking out a HRA SG. The pictures start with the HRA FGs. Notice the IHC bolt.

Great report & pics, thank you! That is some georgeous USGI wood, on the SG HRA's! Then when I saw a pic with all the orange-woods - . Personally, I'd pass on the LMR barrel, if it was wearing that flavor.

I saw the pic of the National Match op rod, on one of the HRA's. What is it that makes it a better op rod, than the standard ones?
