Default Welcome, Mike!

If your issue is anything about the CMP, then this forum is the place to be.

But, the M-1 is a big subject so I recommend you check out "M1 Garand Forum.com".

What you'll find there is maximal expertise and generosity with minimal personality and ego.

Welcome to the forum. That rifle looks just like my Springfield. Great shooter. I love it. Although the deer are not too crazy about it. Congrats on getting an H & R!

Your rifle is dirty, and needs some gentle cleaning, using methods other's have posted already.
I would try to fix the gas cylinder yourself. There's a chance it may be original to the rifle. You'll have to do some research to figure out if its an HRA gas cylinder or not.
In terms of quality, I've received many service grades over the years that were in worse condition than that. Don't be dismayed. Go through the parts, and see how many original parts you have. If they are all original HRA parts, then I'd say you did quite well! Its a keeper.
If you still don't like it, you could sell it to a collector on the forums here, and use the money to purchase one that you like.
