No significance. It illustatres that all is not "black and white" in any HRA serial range.

Dave, I've got my info on my HRA 5.6 ready to send but I don't see anyone else posting all their info. I don't mind sending this in an open post but if you have another way you prefer please let me know.

Default Couple of questions

5593xxx
HRA bolt- 6528287 'U'
trigger housing HRA 6528290 N
Hammer 554608
Safety HRA
Op Rod 6535382 HRA
Rear sight knobs HRA-W
Barrel 6535448 3-55 HRA, chamber in the white
Gas lock screw HRA-O
High Hump gas lock
Wider front sight . 720
Stock small 3/8 eagle with large back porch, plain 'P'
My rifle's serial number doesn't seem to match the letter sequince. The letter is F. The barrel is a 3-55 HRA barrel. Everything matches on the rifle, including the stock.

Why the deviation between the 'F' and the later serials? Is this one of the rifles HRA redid because of poor heat treatment?

Where did that rumor originate?

Heat lots revert to batches of steel supplied to HRA. All steels in a particular "melt" weren't used entirely in succession. These "melts" came in by the tons and had to be prepared and cut for the forging dies. From time to time, these older melts were cleaned up and used out of order from their delivery. The more steel that was delivered and accumulated, the greater the chance for deviation from a heat lot-to-serial number. Your HRA 5593609 is just one example.

Whatever the heatlot, if the metallurgists determined its content acceptable, the steel was the same no matter when it was used. There is nothing sinister or unusual about their "out of order" use whatsoever. IHC did it and so did SA, both WW2 and post war. Actually SA had tons of steel leftover from WW2 and it was used for some post-war new production 7 years later.

[QUOTE=Rolling Thunder;214099]Where did that rumor originate?

Not a rumor. I got the information from Scott Duff's Post War Garand book. He interviewed a former H & R employee who said that there were some rifles that didn't meet standards. Instead of pulling the serial numbers and going on, H & R destroyed the defective receivers and reused the serial numbers on new receivers.

Thank you for the information regarding the heat lot numbers. It cleared alot of things up.
