Many find this an objectionable trait of this rifle and as a "cure" they fill in the rear sight aperture and re-drill it for a smaller size aperture. For whatever reason this is legal by the CMP rules. Now for the rub, this alteration and it is an alteration, wasn't done by our servicemen when the 03A3 was our issued military rifle. It was done years later by those looking for an advantage in CMP matches. If this modification wasn't done in the timeframe this rifle was issued, then it shouldn't be allowed today if you are going to follow the CMP rule book pertaining to shooting "as-issued" rifles.

If they want to have 03A3 rifles with (intentionally made) smaller rear sight apertures fine, just put them into their own sub category so a person shooting a real honest-to-goodness "as-issued" rifle isn't competing against the doctored up rifle. Fair is fair, but not in this case and many other CMP rules.

It would be interesting to know the age distribution of as-issued competitors. There certainly are a lot of shooters who are WELL past the age of military service and I consider this rule to be a concession to them (me.) I don't think it is going to help 20 year old eyes very much.
