I'm pretty sure the scope makes it a no-go, but I'm curious if you can shoot it anyway just for giggles. Anyone ever tried one for Modern military?

Why not shoot it in NRA highpower as an any sight match rifle? If you're doing this for fun, who really cares what it's considered by the rulebook?
The beauty of NRA highpower is that under "match rifle" or "any sight match rifle" you can run just about anything you can dream of without worrying about service rifle/as issued/modern military rule restrictions. |

5.2.5 Modern Military Rifles with Optical Sights Modern Military Rifles with optical sights are permitted only if the match program specifically permits optical sights or provides for a separate competition class for rifles with optical sights. If you showed up with it would they let you shoot out of competition? Probably. |
