I can only speak of my experience. I bought a Garand stock in which I could not make out the cartouche. I stripped it, being careful in the area of the cartouche, and after applying the stain, I could make out a faint "WRA" cartouche. It helped in my case, but maybe not in yours.

Did you ever try it on light wood does it darken it up or does it stay light? I have a light colored stock that i want to darken up will it do that?

If it's walnut, it will DEFINATELY darken it up. Birch or beech, probably not.

Don't know of anybody using it on birch, so no pictures. But, knowing birch, staining it would produce uneven results at best.
