Your 44 US was manufactured in early 1943 in the first production run. The serial number block started at 100,000. The first 14,500 rifles made were provided with a Lyman 57 rear aperture sight with later rifles having the Mossberg S 100

It was a military trainer that was issued to all branches of service. I'm not sure of the going price for them now but definitely more than you gave for it.

Thanks for the info its a grand old 22 rifle. It has the Mossberg site S331. I think its a latter site replacement.

It's definitely worth $150, around 10 years ago. Now, at least $300 if you have the rear sight. Those old mossy are good shooters in its own rights. But it's getting harder to find parts, ie magazine, rear sight. So if you have a complete package, it's worth hanging onto. If you want more info, head over to rimfirecentral, Mossberg subforum. Lots of experts that can help.

every so often (someone) makes a run of magazines. You just have to strike ( purchase) when the iron is hot. Other stuff show up from time to time. Good purchase. They're shooters.
