Default Screw Head Opening Sizes in Recoil Plates

Hey, I recently picked up a mix master carbine with a Standard Products recoil plate and Winchester stock. I notice that the head of the screw that goes through the stock doesn't sit flush with the top surface of the recoil place plate, but rather sits up above the hole, as though the hole isn't large enough for the screw head. What's the logical explanation for this? How do I remedy it? Are the plate openings of varying sizes, or are the screw heads of different sizes? obviously I have some kind of a mis-match.

A guess: The screw isn't GI, but something from a hardware store. Since SP had threads that typically ran the length of the screw what does yours' look like?

The screw may just not be tightened enough. Does the head fit the hole in the recoil plate, i.e. have you removed the screw and looked at it in reference to the recoil plate?
