okay I lied.

I know this forum basically deals with CMP 'artifcats' of wood and metal, but did the M16 or M16A1 ever get issued with leather slings as opposed to the web slings?

I am pretty confident leather WAS NOT issued for M16s, but wanted to confirm.

Yes, some of these probably are the same thing. But there are obviously several different manufacturers or someone applying some very different techniques. Bear in mind, some of these I purchased in the 80's from Holland, and was assured they were Dutch. And this last batch, which is actually quite old, is the one that contained all the "leftover" cellophane and stickers with various "made in" labels. So all I know for sure is, they're leather, they look right, and they work well, regardless of where they were produced.

Some of you have already noticed that, once unwrapped, there's that great leather smell...

My memory was correct, these are (long or front strap) approximately 48" by themselves.

I have run across some authentic ones which were 54" or just under. Those were/are the 1907 "Modified" or "1907A1" slings for the B.A.R., sometimes with the third hood excised. These were never "issue" with the M16 or any variant, but I keep seeing individual shooters, some of them military, using variants of this leather sling. (2016 update) I did notice recently some of the active military precision shooters I know use all black M1907 "long" clones. Then I realized: I sold them those slings a while back!!

Which in turn means I sent someone a week ago or so an incomplete answer when he asked me how long they are. The FRONT portion is 48 total inches. The lowers measure in the area of 26 1/4" LEATHER SPAN, exclusive of swivel and hook. Some of the "long" versions, the "short" strap is over 28".
