Default M1 Bayonet won’t “click”

Hello all,
I recently bought one of the 16 inch blade bayonets just for fun and noticed it won’t lock or click onto my Garand. After taking it apart I noticed the hinge arm isn’t going up high enough to lock onto my Garand. I’ve replaced the spring on the release button and that didn’t help. What can I do to make it lock to my rifle?

Pictures would help. Make sure the catches are properly mated or the bayonet won't properly attach. I'm assuming you have a USGI bayonet.

I have one that I had to take a file too and trim the notch a bit.

I'll bet that having a bayonet mounted would stop people from bothering you at the range, huh?

The most common cause I have seen for bayonet not fitting is a bent hilt.

I have found that frequently the bayonet lug on the rifle has a few nicks or burrs that must be removed to allow the bayonet to fully engage the mounting lug and lock into place.

What is a hinge arm? Anyway, color the slot on the bayo and the bayo lug with magic marker, slide it as far on as possible a couple of times, look where the black wears off and modify as needed. Hopefully the bayo not the lug. Don't worry, that WD-40 jerryjeff suggested will remove any excess.
