Default Surplus USMC "Ka-bar" style knives

Not sure if this is a great price at $36 but figured id pass it along in case some of y'all are in the market for a legit surplus USMC knife/scabbord.

Plus shipping I suppose.

IIRC, the 498 is an Ontario model number. About $45 delivered new on Amazon.

I bought a bunch of these a few months back when I had a 25% off coupon. They were all great. Some were new and some had rack numbers/names painted on them and showed light use. Great deal for a good knife that has USGI provenance, unlike those bought new on Amazon.

Went to order one. Besides excessive shipping, after several attempts to order one anyway, the page kept kicking me back to (re)fill in info already filled in….got way too frustrating so to heck with them…...

Very much doubt you're seeing real surplus Ka-Bars for $45 or $50. Especially when unclesamsretail says, "KA-Bar Style.". That's likely a J.A. Pan Co. copy.

The "498" is an Ontario product. MSRP = $43.90.

These are legit US surplus. As I said above, some had rack numbers and even names of the Marines that carried them.

From what I have read I believe there is a difference in the military contract 498's (last contract in the 1980's) which had their blades either blued or parkerized versus the commercial versions currently being made which are powder coated.

Blockhead, do remember what type of finish the ones you recieved had?

All looked parkerized to me. None blued.

The knives being sold are US military (primarily USMC) surplus. As has been mentioned, some of the sheaths are marked with the Arms Room numbers.

The 498 designation is the Ontario Knife Company commercial designation, although they also produce other similar knives for commercial sales. Ontario is currently the only supplier of this knife on military contract, and the commercial ones meet the military specifications.

The Military Designation is Knife, Combat, With Sheath (NSN 1095-00-392-4102).
The finish is Parkerization.

Maker markings that have shown up so far are US / Camillus, N.Y., US / Camillus, US / Conetta, and US / Ontario. Also a very few Ka-Bar 1211 which probably were from PX sales inventory as they do not meet specifications.

Ka-Bar has not had a contract for this style knife since 1945, although many Marines have purchased and carried commercial versions.

Condition has generally been from almost new to very good. Some of the ones still in the sale inventory show much more wear and use and will probably be sold only when they are reaching the bottom of the barrel.
