Default New Garand (first one!)

This past Friday evening, I decided to make the trip to the North Store to check on availability of a HRA SG and to look around.

I was the first customer. There were about 20-25 HRA SG to choose from. After looking through the racks, I narrowed my choice down to two. Jim at the desk, inspected them for me and helped me choose a 5.6 HRA with a HRA barrel and SA trigger group. I was able to get one with no Greek park on any components. The card stated it was a 2 at the muzzle and 2 at the throat. Jim gauged it for me and he said it was more like 1.25 at the muzzle and just under two at the throat.

It has a pumpkin stock, but after getting numbers like that, who cares? I refinish or replace over the winter.

I picked up a can of HXP and a box of enblocs to round out my purchase. I took it out Sunday and I'm shooting it better than the loaner rifles at my club's highpower shoots. Tomorrow will be my first club shoot with it and I am very excited.

My thanks to Jim at the desk, Melissa and "The Boss" in the office in making my first M1 purchase a very pleasant one. I hope to be able to make another visit in July to pick up some more ammo and tools.

Sounds like a good score! The stock is an easy enough fix. There are plenty of pumpkin stock refinishing threads here.

Sounds just like mine, i have a 5.6 HRA with original barrel and a 42-43' SA trigger group and op rod. I am just wrapping up a linseed oil finish on my pumpkin stock and it looks much better. Congrats but now you have the disease. I told my self i need atleast another surplus bolt action before i buy another garand but if i have the opportunity at a IH all bets are off. One thing i will say is its been tough finding a proper trigger group for this thing.

I believe everyone of us has said "I only need one Garand". Because of money troubles I'm down to just two and my lower lip still quivers when I say that.

Wait until the M1 carbine bug gets a hold of you too. That's a whole other addiction you will have to deal with. You can't have a Garand without having it's baby brother too. It's not nice to break up a family.
Congratulations on your first and enjoy while we still can...

Congrats on your first of many more to come. The pumpkin stocks may not be the best lookers, but they do have a tight lock up.

You did a great job with the stock. Look forward to the final product. This should give inspiration to others that are not pleased with the orange color.

Paid money to see that on a double bill with "She Shoulda Said No." And no, I'm not that old - it was the 1970's and the theater showed old movies sometimes.

I hope "She shoulda said no" doesn't come to my wife's mind when the FedEx truck pulls up!
