Default Any Asian language experts out there??

Saw this marking (see picture below) on a M1903 stock. Any idea what language and what it says? My guess is Japanese and it says "Forget Pearl Harbor"!

Looks like Kanji to me (which both the Chinese and Japanese use).

You may want to email your local state university, they could easily translate it for you.

It's not one of the two Asian languages I know (read and write).

Same here, wife looked at it and said it is Chinese or Japanese, but it didn't form a complete word.

Am I a party pooper? When I look at it with the left hand side of photo as bottom (which makes the most sense as the sling is on that side) it looks like English. Something like: unkown letter, e, r, e, open parenthesis, 16, close parenthesis.

Since its a 03, do you have anything on the provenance to indicate its Asian? What year is it?

The rifle is from 1917 and, like most M1903s is of mixed "parentage". 1911 SA bbl, WWII stock, etc.
