Default Field Grade Insights welcomed as to what I received

It came clean and well-lubed. It looks like someone’s safe queen.

More photos…

No pitting! For that reason alone it is nicer than the FG I received this time last year (which I was still very happy with).

A few dings and gouges in the stock. Some scratches to the finish on the magazine floor plate and on the trigger guard. Of course, that just adds character.

I'm not sure about the rear sight, but everything else seems to fall into the July-August, 1943 range. I'm still new to this, so I only know what I've gleaned from the interwebs, so please enlighten me where I'm incorrect.

The cartouches are faint, but it looks like a GAW stock.

RA-P on the bottom of the stock (Raritan Arsenal, and perhaps the "P" is for Henry Peterson, the chief inspector between 1942 and 1946).

Two P proof marks.

According to the hang tag, the muzzle reading is 3 and the throat reading is 3+. Does the muzzle look like it has been recrowned? (see photos) I don’t have gauges, but the with the bullet test, it goes deeper than my other Garand. I’ll try and get out and shoot it this weekend, weather permitting. (UPDATE: It shoots great!)

CMP Inspection date: 10-16-17. A white inventory tag was also attached to front sight.
  • SN: 1,833,XXX (August, 1943)
  • Receiver drawing #: D28291 28 (July, 1943? I could only find -27 and -29 listed online). Other receiver markings: O (or “C”) 43B<> and a “V” (or Roman numeral 5)
  • Barrel: 2-S-A-7-43 (July, 1943). A couple of other barrel markings look like “R” at different angles.
  • Bolt drawing #: D28287-12SA, Heat lot: S-06<> (August, 1943)
  • Oprod (uncut) D35382 6 SA (Oct, 1942-Dec, 1943). I didn’t get a photo of the op rod spring, but it was solid black.
  • Follower assembly: 11
  • Gas plug (well worn): Marked with a P and an O (Elastic Stop Nut Corp.)
  • Rear sight: PB (Pietro Beretta)
  • Trigger group: 028290-12-SA (Dec, 1942-Nov, 1944)
  • Hammer: C46008-5 SA (June, 1943-Aug, 1944)
  • Safety: C46015-9SA (Aug, 1942-Oct, 1943)

Very nice! I think RA-P is the Raritan Arsenal rebuild stamp!

Breech in the white and non-chromed pads for gas cylinder. That's awesome!

The original P was when it was manufactured. The plain P is the rebuild proof put on at Raritan. PB is Pierto Barreta(sp). Italian.
