I have some Kynoch surplus 30.06. The boxes are marked "Lot 3, K 27, 6 58"
Does anyone have any idea whether this is corrosive or non-corrosive? I am cleaning the rifle as if it is corrosive ammo. Last edited by COL Hal; 03-29-2015 at 04:19 PM. |

I would either test it (with positive and negative controls) or continue to clean as corrosive.

Non corrosive, but loaded hot and not Garand-safe. Bolt actions would be fine with it.

2nd the piece about it being hot. Cases are know to rupture. Shoots fine in my '03, especially since I have the safeguard of the Hatcher hole.

Is that all Kynoch or just this batch? I have some 1953 Kynoch and haven't had any issues. This is the first time I've heard this. Thanks, Carl.

I bought several cans of 250rd belted Kynoch K-53 when the CMP offered it back in approx 2010. It was most definitely non-corrosive with very brittle berdan primed brass. I shot quite a bit of it in my 0A3s and 1917s. Ended up several split cases, and not a speck of corrosion from it. It was originally MG ammo- you can tell it packs a bit more of a punch than HXP or LC does. Firing a few rounds through a Garand would probably be ok, but no way I'd put a large amount of it through an M1.

What originally got my attention was, what appeared to be, heavier recoil with the Kynoch ammo. One of my buddies also noticed louder than normal muzzle report and an increase in muzzle flash. I'm glad I only put 16 rounds through the weapon. Thanks for all the good feedback. |
